CCO Discusses Lowers’ Courses
After a faculty meeting last week, the College Counseling Office offered lowers several "drop-in times" to answer questions regarding courses. The scheduled meetings were planned from 11:30 to 1:30 on April 23 and April 25. As the college counseling process nears, several lowers and their parents have questions related to course choices, according to Head College Counselor Betsy Dolan. "We wanted to make sure we were available to them as they made their course choices," she said.
Dolan recommended that lowers keep a positive, level outlook emotionally and physically. "We’re setting a foundation for a healthy perspective regarding academic, extracurricular and personal life," Dolan said.
Every September, CCO has an informative meeting with preps and lowers about how to make the most of their Exeter experience, and sends letters to students and parents about appropriate standardized testing. The College Counseling Office believes that preps and lowers shouldn’t, from a developmental perspective, worry about the college process, but should rather focus on developing intellectual interests, study habits and extracurricular and athletic passions, according to Chapter One of the CCO Guidebook.
The document further explains that the course requirement fulfills credits that many selective colleges and universities recognize, but it is recommended that students continue to take math past calculus (MAT410) and attain full fluency in one non-heritage foreign language, rather than a less in-depth exposure in two languages. Replacing an English elective with any other senior elective has no effect on college applications.
