On the smaller side, Farm and Garden Club is a fun club to join to reconnect back to the Earth amidst the hustle and bustle of Exeter. Co-heads Nate Bogardus, Sarah Ryu and Meg Bolan plan on expanding the club next year, moving onto new ideas with more members along for the ride. Next fall, the farmer’s market will be up and running again, and Farm and Garden Club plans on being in contact with as many farmers as possible, with the hope we can contribute to them and be helpful, while learning about the source of our food. It’s important to have a healthy relationship with the rest of the community, and this will be a great opportunity for us to reach out to farmers from across the area. This past year, a portion of land has been tilled, and we hope to contribute to that by creating and growing a community garden. Anyone is welcome to join in on the project, sticking their hands in the dirt, and adding to the enjoyment.
When asked what she would expect from Farm and Garden club, Issy Wise (‘19) says “Farm and Garden Club would inspire me to live a healthier lifestyle. It’s a nice way to relieve stress, get some fresh air, and experience new things. I’ve never gardened before, but Exeter is a land of opportunity.” Another prep, Helene Stockton, says “I’m very excited to join Farm and Garden Club, especially when we connect with the Farmer’s Market. I’m from Portland, Oregon, a place that is very environmentally aware. I think the Exeter scene can become cleaner, and a good way to do that is to garden.”
We plan on having many new members next year. Rising senior, Honor Clements, told us “Senior year has been planned around capitalizing on the skills I’ve learned here. I’ve taken Human Population Growth and Resource Consumption, and I’m interested in sustainable agriculture. I can put into practice my passions with Farm and Garden Club.”
For these last few weeks, we encourage you to visit the farmers market on Thursday afternoons. Lining Swasey Parkway, the market is a wonderful spot to soak in some sun and watch crew boats make their way down the river. The stalls contain a variety of foods and crafts that are delicious, intriguing, and harvested with care. This is a tremendous way to connect with farmers and those who love food, and we encourage you to take advantage of it!
Farm and Garden club has yet to truly blossom, and is still under development for the details. Without the support of the Exeter students, though, it won’t be a success. For anyone who is interested in joining next year, let one of the co-heads know, and invite your friends. The more the merrier!
