Trendwatch

Hey Trendsetters,

This is the last week of winter! Once we make it through this last flurry of snow and cold it’ll (hopefully) be smooth sailing of only sunshine and happiness! London Fashion Week has been going on this week, and we’ve been inspired by lots of the looks. Hopefully you’ll be able to apply some of them to your fashion repertoire here!

Although the midi skirt has become increasingly popular over the past few seasons, it has generally been a hard sell because a lot of women worry that the style won’t be as flattering as other lengths. It doesn’t really remind us of the long, sleek figures created by a fitting maxi or the sex appeal of a mini. It is very “middling,” as Vogue.com puts it. However, midi cuts have been hitting the runways on shows all over London Fashion Week this past week. Whether styled as a midi skirt or flowing culottes, showing the shin has been all the rage. Houses like Saint Laurent, Rodarte and Marc Jacobs, as well as Burberry. We saw a combination of pencil skirt styles, culottes and more romantic styles such as lace, which kept us guessing and kept the excitement up.

Visiting scholar Alexandra Chen looked lovely in a jacquard baroque inspired print dress with pretty patent heels. Lara Galligani ’17 looked lovely in a baroque inspired print dress matched with a black leather jacket and marbled flats. Caroline Colbert ’17 rocked a pair of black and white joggers with black booties and a gorgeous gold drop necklace. Will Rau ’16 kept it preppy in his forest green corduroys and light pink gingham button-down. Bonnie LaBonté ’17 kept the school-girl vibes fresh by pairing a plaid mini with white sneaks and sheer black tights. Art teacher Tara Misenheimer looked beautiful in a black flowy top and tight jeans.

As the runways in New York and London seem to prove, the white sneaker trend is here to stay! Shows including Calvin Klein have been exhibiting their outfits paired with white sneakers. Calvin Klein’s show in New York was, as usual, gorgeous. His monochrome color palette combines all sorts of materials from silks to cotton and leather. The genius use of tan and dead white is very fashion forward and exactly what we want to see on campus this spring! So keep up the trendy sneaks and mixture of off white tones!

Remember, trendsetters, applications are due next Friday, March 4. Email abutler@exeter.edu or jbornemann@exeter.edu for more information.

xoxo,

Lexi and Julia
