Life Advice

Hello lovely advice seekers! I know you’ve missed Life Advice, but luckily it’s back as the Editor’s Pick for this week! Woo! Because it’s been awhile since the last Life Advice, the questions for this week are a mix of all different kind of winter term concerns. How do you survive winter term?Winter term, for many, is the true struggle of Exeter. I personally think this because it’s the halfway point of the school year—it’s so far along in the year that it’s hard to remember the beginning of the year, but not far enough that you can really see the end. I think this feeling of being “stuck” is what makes winter term seem unbearable at times, but there are definitely ways to come out on the other side. I think the most important thing to do so you don’t fall into a pit of despair is to make sure to keep people around you. It’s easy in the winter to hole up in your room and fold yourself into a little cocoon, but I think it’s important to make sure you take time to do something fun and spend time with your friends because having little things to look forward to, like a trip out to dinner on a Friday night, can make the rest of winter term seem much more bearable. Is Abbot Casino a fun event?I think Abbot Casino can be really fun! For those of you who don’t know, Casino is a “gambling” event hosted by Abbot every year. A bunch of tables are set up with different poker games and the whole event is pretty much trying to sneak your way into one of the seats. But more importantly, Casino is all about the picture taking. The formal wear has everyone looking their best, and the bulk of the night is scurrying around Grainger trying to find that cute senior you have a little crush on and bashfully asking them to take a picture with you. It sometimes gets tiring after an hour or two of being there, but especially if you go with a couple of friends, it’s a really fun night.Does it matter if I’m probably going to spend Valentine’s Day without a significant other this year?If you have a significant other, that’s cool, but if not, there are plenty of other ways you can fill your Valentine’s Day with love! Leslie Knope, a character in the TV show Parks and Rec, pioneered the idea of Galentine’s Day, a Valentine’s Day to celebrate friendships with your girl friends, but it can apply to guys, girls and or any friends at all! Bottom line is, Valentine’s Day can be just as much fun with your friends, so don’t worry if you’re not spending it with a significant other! What’s the best way to spend your weekend during winter term?Personally, I like to take things easy on the weekends during winter term. I think it can be really fun to just stay in and watch a movie or play some card games with a couple of friends. Some people find that with the lull of winter it can be more fun to go out and do things, like hang around grill or go to someone’s house, but I think it doesn’t really matter what you do. It’s more important to be around people that you care about and have fun with.I hope that in times of struggle throughout the rest of this winter you can look back to this article and think, “Wow, I’ve got all the winter term advice I need.” Happy second-half-of-winter and just remember, it’s almost spring break! Love,Bella <3
