Life Advice
Hello! I hope everyone had a wonderful parents’ weekend and that you’re not missing them too much already. If you are, remember that Halloween is just around the corner and I’m here to answer some questions on the night of mischief itself!
It’s my first year at Exeter, and I was wondering if it’s socially acceptable for me to go trick-or-treating.
Who cares about what is socially acceptable? If you want to go trick-or-treating, go! Some people may give you a hard time when you come to their doors, but if you’re persistent enough, I’m sure they’ll at least toss you a couple of Whoppers. I think you have the most fun when you’re with a group of friends because it reassures you that harassing people of Exeter for candy is neither childish nor foolish in the slightest. Hopefully you have some great friends to do this with because it’s a nice thing to do on the spookiest night of the year.
If I don’t go trick-or-treating, is there any other way I can get some free candy?
Well, you should definitely go trick-or-treating, but if for some reason you can’t, there are a couple of ways you could go about getting some candy. You could ask a day student friend to get you some, but they may not be willing to give up their goods. Another option is persuading your parents to send you a bag of candy to your P.O. box. If you can’t make any of these things happen, FIGURE OUT HOW TO GO TRICK-OR-TREATING!!!
Should I go for a solo costume, or a group one with my whole squad?
You can never go wrong with a squad costume, but if you’re feeling especially independent this Halloween, dressing up on your own is super fun, too. You can also coordinate a costume with one other person; the possibilities are really endless! I think the best way to figure out what you should do is to think about what you want to be for Halloween and if that involves other people, start asking around; if not, have a great time going solo.
What movies should I watch to really get me in a Halloween mood?
There are really two ways you can go about movies around Halloween: there are the classic horror movies or the more “family-friendly” alternatives. If you are really into horror movies, “The Shining,” “Carrie” or “Friday the Thirteenth,” even though they aren’t about Halloween, will definitely get you feeling freaked out. If you want to opt for the more tame option, movies like “Halloweentown,” “Twitches” or “Hocus Pocus” would be great choices. These movies are a lot less scary and usually have a happy ending. I think these are better for just feeling like it’s Halloween, while not making you cry from fear. Personally, I go with the Halloween-themed movies because I don’t like being extra creeped out around Halloween, but some people are into that fear factor, so do what makes you feel the most like it’s Halloween time.
