Trendwatch
Hey, Trendsetters!
Although the weather’s been a bit erratic with the first frost of the year, along with some rain, campus has still kept up its style. Michaella Henry ’16 looked ravishing in a simple grey dress with a vertically striped, 70s-inspired cardigan and simple black flats. Looking cool and casual, Stella Woo ’17 rocked a three-toned puffer vest, chambray button down and navy and white striped bodycon skirt. She topped off the look with simple white sneakers. Peter Whallon ’16, better known as Pistol Pete, looked handsome as ever in a unique navy and hunter green houndstooth turtleneck paired with a classic leather watch. Looking flawless as ever, Sydney McKiernan ’17 paired a simple cotton dress with an oversized light colored flannel and white converse high-tops. Hannah Gustafson ’17 embodied a classic style in her navy and pink embroidered sundress.
The up and coming trend of bold color combinations is making an appearance in street style. We picked out five of our favorites to try on campus this fall: warm pink + musky orange + rusty red; poppy pink + deep orchard + candy red; cerulean blue + violet + romantic red-pink; bubblegum pink + mustard yellow + denim blue; grass green + olive + straw. Mixing vivid colors is a great way to create a statement outfit instead of focusing on one statement piece.
Drake’s recent release of his music video for Hotline Bling has received much praise for his creativity and the fun vibes. Throughout the video, Drake has four costume changes with each outfit exuding his luxurious yet sporty style. Marjon Carlos from Vogue cites this music video in calling Drake the “poster child of elevated athleisure.” Drake embodies this trend as he pairs your standard set of joggers with a lavish cashmere turtleneck and hardy Timberlands. His genius combination of designer pieces and gym classics creates an even more lustful vibe around his untouchable aura.
Seoul Fashion Week displayed a plethora of interesting trends, but the most predominant aspect of street style has been the rainbow hair that seems to be everywhere. Style fiends were spotted all over SFW with creative beauty ideas, ranging from glitter everywhere to heaps of jewellery piled on top of another, to the epic culmination of rainbow hair. Achieved mainly through chalks and dyes, these looks range from permanent to a 24-hour commitment only. Hues from seafoam to lavender to dusty pinks, blues and greys, were all spotted, as well as bright greens and red tones as well. In times when fashion alone is simply not enough to express style, hair and accessories come to play an almost equal role in finishing up an ensemble and easily add spice and personality. The playful vibe exhibited inspired an easy approach to fashion, which I’m sure we can all pick up and use to lighten up these cool and darker days.
