Life Advice

Well, it’s about that time. Spring, although having taken its sweet time, has sprung upon our lovely campus, and your life gurus, Jake and Nolan, want to be around the 45th and 46th people to say, “Happy Spring!” With the new season comes some new interesting questions, sent in by those of you with nothing better to do, in this week’s Life Advice.

Q1: I am a double varsity athlete, but that’s pretty much all I have going for me, and I want to branch out. What are some good things I can do to get involved this term?

A1: Well the first thing I can recommend would be Exeter Social Service Organization (ESSO); it is a great way to not only connect to the school, but to the community as well. My personal favorite ESSO club is Gym Buddies. Look around; there are plenty of things to do.

Q2: *Sigh* I made JV for my sport this season. Again. What can I do to show the varsity coach they made the wrong decision?

A1: If you are in this position, don’t worry, we’ve all been there. And by “we” I mean people that came in as preps and not triple repeat super-sophomores. Anyway, never be afraid to go up to the coach and ask for a minute of his or her time. A little talking can go a long way. Also, working out can always help you get better at your sport, but it will be even better if you time it so that the coach sees you in the weight room.

Q3: So “sky’s out thighs out” season has arrived, and I recently purchased four new pairs of chubbies. How do I get my quads and calves looking nice and toned for the girls on the south side quad?

A3: The gym’s weight room has many excellent resources to take you from average to absolute savage. Calf raises, the squat rack and the “birth-giver” are all good exercises to bring your leg game to the next level. If all else fails, try walking around your dorm on your tip-toes. It’s a nice burn that you deserve!

Q4: Upper year is right around the corner, and I am so scared for U.S. history. What should I do to prepare over the summer?

A4: Let’s face it. Most of us learned about United States history throughout middle and elementary school. Major acts, civil rights, presidential elections, etc. That’s just scratching the surface of the history of this great nation. I recommend the following movies to really go into depth of 331,332 and 333: “Forrest Gump,” “Training Day,” “Remember the Titans,” “Miracle” and “Grown Ups.” This will take you to a whole new level in class discussions.

With love and awkward stares from across the quad,

Jake and Nolan
