Dear Fashionable Friends,
This past week marked a very important annual event in the fashion world—New York Fashion Week. Quite an array of looks strutted the runway. Tommy Hilfiger had a seemingly super-bowl inspired show with models decked out in varsity attire and vintage vibes walking down a football field. Alexander Wang was on a completely different side of the fashion spectrum with leather, platform combat boots, fierce looks and quite a bit of black. Diane Von Furstenberg went for an entirely different look with elegant black and white silhouettes complemented by striking blue and red hues and feminine lace. Her show was the definition of sexy and sophisticated.
With the recent death of Oscar de la Renta, fashion enthusiasts were curious to see if his successor, Peter Copping, would uphold the name. Copping proved himself worthy with a stunning debut show that was full of elegant vintage silhouettes and classic prints in tweed and silk. Some of the models even sported long lady-like gloves. We loved the retro feel of it all.
While last season held underlying ‘60’s and ‘70’s vibes, we noticed a common ‘90’s theme among many of the shows this week. From Coach’s leather and flannel to Thakoon’s long sweaters and dresses in saturated prints, we saw multiple designers return to the ‘90’s. All we can say is fashion always repeats itself!
Also on the runway we learned that no part of this world isn’t Ye’s world when he debuted his Adidas line. Kanye stated that his simple line was inspired by problems, solutions, his art background and (most importantly) his heart background. The collection features plenty of neutral earth tones, sports bras, full body nude stocks, oversized coats and bulletproof vests to accompany his new shoes, Yeezy Boosts, which appear to be a cross between a high top sneaker and an outer space slipper. When they go on sale, will they stack to his Red Octobers? Stay tuned to find out.
This week on campus, many of us were too busy bundling up to worry about making statements. Christian Lutete ‘15 did, however, excellently pull of a navy suit complete with suspenders and a bow tie. Nico Coleman ‘16 also unveiled his rabbit fur ushanka hat in the midst of one of the countless blizzards we’ve experienced this term. JT Thompson ‘16 wore a vibrant pair of cerulean pants that seemed to also match his backpack. Was that intentional? We don’t know, but we love it.
Mitchell Kirsch ‘17 was back on his turtleneck-sweater game this week donning a navy fair isle sweater with orange, electric blue, cobalt and neon yellow accents and large snowflake details in place of stripes on top of his iconic white turtleneck—a look that could never go wrong.
Outside of fashion, Drake has been in the news with his earth-shattering mixtape, “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late.” The mixtape has had a huge impact both in and outside the industry after going platinum in 20 hours. If you're looking for something to get you in the mood to stunt on all of your haters, we recommend listening to the album at least twice a day and playing “Know Yourself” in series’ of three.
Stay warm and hip, Exeter!
xoxo,
Millie and Helen
