Life Advice
Q1: My roommate and I have been rooming together since lower year. Our relationship has grown and he’s my closest friend here at Exeter. Lower year was my first harsh winter, as I’m not from the North, and Blizzard Nemo took the both of us by surprise. We were careless, I’m ashamed to say. Our awareness game was at an all time low. We slipped, we fell, there were bruises… those were bad days. Come lower spring, we took a long look at ourselves. We were forced to ask ourselves: Is this what I want to be? Is this the best I can do? We decided to come back with a vengeance the next winter, and battle the feet of snow and slippery paths with a fire in our hearts. We made a promise: if even one of us slipped and fell just once, we would both withdraw and go apply to Andover with hopes of a better life for us there. The rules were simple, if your knees or buns touched the ground, it qualified as a fall. Come upper winter, only two weeks into the term, I took a crushing defeat to the ice. I let my team down. This winter, both my roommate and I have been going strong, and with four weeks left in the term, we’re desperate for anything that can ensure us success. Help us out.
OGSimpy: I admire both of your persistence. This is a courageous fight you two are participating in, and I encourage other Exonians to stand up and exhibit the same courage and determination. There is one particular tip that I can offer that might give you two a hand as the stakes rise.
Step One: Take the next bus to Walmart and buy yourself a pound of salt.
Step Two: Cut a hole in the bottom of your backpack with a diameter of 1.5 inches.
Step Three: Cut a hole in the bottom of the bag of salt with a diameter of 1 inch.
Step Four: Flip the bag of salt upside down and place it in the backpack. Pull the hole in the bag through the hole in the backpack and staple them together.
Now, when you walk to class, wear the backpack on your stomach and let salt fall before you, ensuring that each step is secure. Problem solved. Good luck, my friends, and stay safe.
Q2: My dorm has begun preparation for this year’s Relay for LIfe. However we don’t have a single clue as to what kind of booth we should hold. Any creative suggestions?
OGYoosk: First of all, props for taking initiative on this amazing event. Last year’s Relay for Life had a profoundly positive effect on the community and it’s good that groups have already started preparing to make it another successful event. I heard from Ewald’s very own Sterling Weatherbie that the American Culture Club’s kissing booth was a huge success last year since it was both original and exciting. It might be cool to do something that reflects your group. For example, we play a lot of FIFA here in Ewald so we’re planning to hold a FIFA booth this year.
Q3: So I have a bit of spare money lying around that I can spend on anything I want. Have you guys made any good purchases as of recent? It can be anything ranging from clothes, music, or electronics. I need something new in my life.
OGYoosk: To survive the dry winters of Exeter, cocoa butter and chapstick are absolutely crucial. Not to mention a handy water bottle to stay hydrated. Trust me, these small things will carry you far in life.
OGSimpy: Buy yourself and your buddies a feast of calzones and subs.
