Hello fashion enthusiasts and recipients of this newspaper,
Although the rain is abundant and temperatures continue to drop, people have still managed to keep it cute this week. Sacharja Cunningham ‘15 looked warm and functional in layers of grey sweaters-- you can never go wrong with grey!
A fun pair of rainboots can keep you dry and fashionable in the sketchy weather. While Hunter’s are a classic, we really like the new take on rain boots that we’ve started to see on campus-- rubber ankle boots or chelsea-style rainboots. Drew Goydan ‘15 rocked this look, keeping it chic and practical with chelsea boot galoshes, clean-cut scuba skirt and green checked button-down.
Language teacher Ms. Zhao layered for dreary weather with ease in a black tank, robin-egg blue cardigan, navy blue blazer and red and grey scarf. Hannah Mackay ‘17 wore an unforgettable pair of black adidas high tops with white details, never disappointing us as usual!
Speaking of the athletic brand, we are super excited about Adidas’ new collection. After the company’s recent collaboration with Pharrell Williams, Adidas has decided to pair up with designer Mary Katrantzou. The line includes many super cool technicolor printed kicks and incredibly vibrant structured nylon dresses.
Outside of the Exeter bubble, the fashion world experienced a tragic loss this past week. On Monday, Oscar De La Renta, king of red carpet evening wear, was pronounced dead at 82 years old after a long fight with cancer. As a designer to the stars for the past six decades, after starting his namesake label in 1965, his presence in high fashion is unfathomable. He’s designed for Audrey Hepburn to Michelle Obama, and everybody in between.
A native of the Dominican Republic, De La Renta moved to Madrid at the age of 18 to study painting at the Academy of San Fernando. His talents for illustration eventually landed him an apprenticeship with the Spain’s renowned designer, Cristobal Balenciaga. While vacationing in Paris, he landed a job at Lanvin-Castillo, and two years later moved to New York City, where he joined the American design house of Elizabeth Arden and began his own line.
To highlight a few of his accomplishments, De La Renta designed George Clooney’s wife’s gown for their recent wedding, one of Hillary Clinton’s gowns in 1997, Laura Bush’s 2005 Inaugural Ball gown, and numerous gowns for actresses attending awards shows and galas, including Amy Adams and Frieda Pinto. RIP Oscar.
xoxo,
Millie and Helen
