Race To Home Base: Student vs. Faculty Softball Game
This past Sunday, Exeter’s JV softball team wrapped up their successful season with a fun student vs. faculty game. Assistant JV coach Megan Campbell led the faculty team, which was comprised of eleven teachers including English instructors Johnny Griffith and Duncan Holcomb, classics instructor Nicholas Unger and science instructor Betsy Stevens.“The purpose of the game was to let the students and faculty have fun together in a friendly competition. The girls had a lot of games cancelled this year, so it was also a chance for them to get in one more game with the added bonus of being able to throw out some of their teachers,” Campbell said. “Also, it was an opportunity for us grownups to show off our softball skills and prove that we're not a bunch of stodgy academics.”Although this was the first year for the student vs. faculty game, Campbell hopes that it will become a yearly tradition for the team.Lower Kate Martel agreed that the game fostered team spirit and closed the JV season well. “This year, softball didn’t have very many games, which was unfortunate. This student vs. faculty game was another opportunity for us to play, and it was also really fun to play against teachers, which we normally only see in the classroom,” she said.Throughout the course of the spring term, softball was plagued with multiple cancelled games. “This year, we had a really late start in terms of games,” lower Lucy Knox, a member of varsity softball, said. “We got rained out almost every week at the beginning of the season. Our first game was a few weeks after all the other sports teams’ first games.”“The JV team this year was a hardworking and spirited bunch,” Campbell said. “Even though their first six games were cancelled due to weather and field conditions, they didn't let that get them down but continued to practice hard and ended the season with five straight victories. We all hope that next year we'll be able to get more games in!”
