Life Advice
Q1: It’s not rare that I find myself a little lost when in the dining hall. I barely ever eat breakfast, and sometimes I don’t want to eat what’s offered for lunch or dinner. What are some things that you guys make by yourselves when you don’t want to eat what’s in the hot line or have a salad or pasta?
OG_polkfolk: Try experimenting with different mixtures of drinks. Peach and grape juice combined is one of my favorites. Also, if you’re looking for smoothie, try mixing vanilla ice cream with grape juice, and you’ll be surprised. If you’re actually hungry, make your own sandwich. I like a turkey panini with provolone cheese and mustard, or a simple tuna melt with cheese. If you’re looking for something more healthy, slice up a banana and toss it in a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or a parfait with some cereal and yogurt.
Q2: My friends have told me that when they need to get somewhere on campus quickly, they “borrow” one of the bikes that are just lying around. How bad is it to “borrow” a bike? There’s no real harm if I return the bike later, right?
Yoosk: Ideally, everyone should have their bikes locked but I know that doesn’t always get done. I’d say it’s not fair to exploit the owner of the bike just because he/she happened to be careless. And just because you return the bike later, that doesn’t mean you’re off the hook. There is a good chance that he/she might think his/her bike got stolen, and you could potentially get in trouble with Campus Safety later. If you need get somewhere as soon as possible, just ask someone in your dorm to let you borrow his/her bike.
OG_polkfolk: If you’re looking for an easy mode of transportation, there’s really no need to “borrow” a bike on campus. Scooters, longboards, and skateboards are obviously pretty popular on campus, and can get you from A to B pretty quickly if you’re in a pinch.
Q3: When crossing the street in between classes, almost everyday I come close to getting ran over. I don’t want to live in fear, what can I do to bring a stop to this?
OG_polkfolk: Bring out the hipster side in yourself and dress in vibrant colors. You know what that means, things like America short shorts, vintage sweaters and jerseys, gold chains and rings—anything to catch someone’s attention. Remember, safety comes first. Especially if it’s dark, people probably won’t see you, especially if they’re old. So make sure to be safe and stay hip.
Yoosk: While it’s true that drivers can be quite reckless, I also often see a lot of Exonians not paying enough attention and running across the crosswalk. It’s important to let the drivers know you’re crossing before you make any sudden moves. Personally, I’d rather be late to class by a couple of minutes than end up with a nasty injury from a car accident.
