Relay for Life: Our Top Five

From Bancroft masseuses to Cilley C-ball players, Exonians gathered in the Love Gym this past Saturday to visit the wide array of booths for this year’s annual Relay for Life. While all were unique and enjoyable, students and faculty agreed that the five most popular booths this year were Amen Hall Jail, Student Council Grill, the Cycling team’s “Peg the Cyclist,” Ewald Dance-Off and the kissing booths sponsored by the American Culture Club and Dunbar Hall.1. Amen Jail: The “jail,” wooden rectangular bars held together with paper strips, was guarded by two or three of the residents of Amen Hall. For three tickets, students were given the chance to trap other students inside the jail for ten minutes. To be released, students had the option of waiting until their “sentence” was over, bribing one of the guards with three tickets or waiting until a friend bailed them out.Students all noted that the Amen Jail was a creative way to collect many tickets from students. Prep John Wang also said that the booth allowed students to enjoy the reactions of people throw into the jail, which varied from anger to laughter.“I thought the Amen Jail was ingenious. The jail was a way to get back at friends and hash out old grudges, but it also allowed the victim to donate more to charity and escape,” Wang said. “It was also quite amusing to watch other people’s reactions to being put in jail. There was a wide spectrum, as some people overreacted and attempted to escape while others were calm and relaxed.”Prep Efia Nuaka, a resident of Amen who helped run the booth, also enjoyed watching the prisoners struggle to break free from the busy jail.“I thought the booth was good, especially because it was constantly busy,” she said. “I also really liked working at it because it was fun to watch people get arrested.”2. Student Council Grill:  StuCo Grill has been a long-standing tradition at Relay for Life. For the booth, StuCo members grill hot dogs and burgers under a small tent outside the gym and sell them along with drinks for tickets. Although there were not a lot of changes made from last year’s booth, the booth was equally as popular as last year. With students limited to either D-Hall food or expensive restaurants for most of the school year, cheap hotdogs and burgers are always welcomed.“It was equally as successful as past years,” upper Robert Conner, who helped grill the food, said. “We always sell most of the patties we buy, and it’s fun for us on Student Council who run the booth.”3. Cycling Booth: Unlike some of the more traditional clubs, the cycling booth was a very original booth that also turned out to be a big hit this year. The booth consisted of different members of the cycling team peddling on a roller in between two mats, one at a time. Students gave tickets in exchange for balls to hurl at the bikers in an attempt to cause funny crashes. This booth provided lots of laughs as students enjoyed watching the various knock outs during the night from students such as lower Rohan Nawalrai.“I thought cycling was a great idea, someone cycling on like a treadmill and people throwing balls at the cyclist trying to knock him down,” Nawalrai said. “It’s like a classic carnival type game.”Lower Hiro Kuwana also found the booth a great hit. “What can be better than knocking Rohan [Pavuluri] off a bike?” he said.4. Ewald Dance: Students enjoyed testing their dance skills this year as they competed one on one on Dance Central 3. The set up was simple: a TV, some speakers and the game accessories. It provided entertainment for both the dancers as they embarrassed themselves in front of their friends and the “audience” laughing at them from the side.“Ewald dance not only got people who were dancing, but also a lot of people who were enjoying the music and watching people dance,” Nawalrai said.5. Kissing Booth: This year’s kissing booth was hosted by both the American Culture Club and Dunbar. Students were invited to enter the booth and make out in privacy for the price of a few tickets. It provided great entertainment for the couples who entered the booth.
