Cinema Weekly: It's About Time

When we sat down to watch About Time this Saturday night, we were prepared for a cliche, boring and unfulfilling rom-com. However, what we got was something much, much different. Not only is this movie original, witty and surprisingly deep, it gives us men an opportunity to bro down and watch a movie that we all secretly love.About Time is a 2013 movie about a guy whose father tells him that the men in their family have the ability to travel in time. Tim, the movie’s protagonist, decides that he will use this power to help his lanky, awkward self find a girlfriend. His first attempt is to try and woo his sister’s friend Charlotte, who stays with his family over the summer. While this goes terribly wrong, it sets the stage for Tim to find his true love, the one and only Rachel McAdams. The movie sets up their relationship immediately, and therefore opens up the rest of the movie to detailing their future together, Tim’s relationship with his father and the two of them raising their three children. In his breakout role, Domhnall Gleeson, who plays Tim, does a fantastic job portraying the gawky goofball intent on finding his soulmate. His performance gives rise to the talents of some of the more experienced actors in the film, such as McAdams, and Bill Nighy, who plays Tim’s aloof and quick-witted father. But, Gleeson takes the stage as the lead actor and does a fantastic job in communicating the thoughts and inner musings of someone presented with the gift of time travel. The plot of this movie is refreshingly original. Rather than following the cliche romantic comedy template and spending the length of the movie on the relationship-related ups and downs of the central couple, this movie allows the characters to introduce a much more personal story. Through their interactions on screen, and the dialogue revealed to us, the story carries a lot of weight and a lot of relevance to those with close relationships to their parents and family. The movie also goes to great lengths to preserve its timeline, and to not let the concept of time travel interrupt the fluidity of its scenes. Through quick costume changes and transitions, the movie seamlessly and subtly incorporates time “jumps” into its script.Ending in a wonderful tear-jerking scene, this movie has definitely earned its place on our list of favorites. We strongly suggest it to anyone in the mood for a good laugh, and a meaningful message. All in all, this movie is well crafted, original and funny. It is definitely worth a watch, and to all you rom-com haters out there, don’t knock this one until you try it. You won’t be disappointed.Much love,Will, Nolan and Mason
