The Lego Movie
While Legos played a huge part in many children’s lives, they take on an even greater role this year—they’re coming to the big screen. These colorful blocks, while entertaining for us at young ages, prove themselves even more amusing when they get put into the hands of Warner Bros. animators. The Lego Movie is engaging, fun and chock-full of Will Ferrell-esque jokes and little kid humor that, deep down, we still find pretty funny. The movie, while childish, makes a mockery of what we, as a society, might be heading toward. In a world where every citizen is the same, likes the same things, and has the same interests and where everyone follows “The Instructions,” a small group of individuals called the “Master Builders” aim to bring liberty and freedom of thought to a world ruled by the treacherous “Lord Business.” Among these freedom fighters are Batman, Gandalf and a Blackbeard spinoff named Metalbeard. Not to mention a unicorn-cat mix creature that spouts rainbows and positive energy. This film takes the viewer on a journey to the Lego Universe, a bright, colorful, fun-filled reality, which provides us Exonians a welcome respite from the drab, dull lives that we all enjoy leading here. The Lego Movie spans a variety of different settings encompassing the Lego Universe. This means it includes all your favorite childhood playsets like the Wild West, Lego police, Lego city, the Bionicle universe and many more that are sure to throw you into a wonderland of nostalgia. When homework, tests, hand-ins and deadlines have got you down, just pop in The Lego Movie and you’ll be good to go.Supported by wonderful performances from all voice actors, The Lego Movie is not one to miss out on. Will Arnett gives a great performance as the unreliable Batman, and Elizabeth Banks does a fantastic job portraying the angst and struggle of self-named WyldStyle, undoubtedly the edgiest character in the entire movie. We highly recommend going into this movie with an open mind. Because of its seemingly childish nature, those who consider themselves too mature for a movie about Legos might immediately make assumptions about it. Our very own Mason Polk refused for the longest time to watch the movie, before succumbing to our awesome peer pressure and admitting the movie’s brilliance. “Okay, okay, it’s not that bad.” Will and Nolan, being younger and immature, went into the movie raving and excited, believing the hype. They left as believers and proponents of the fanbase of the highly successful film.Conclusively, The Lego Movie is worthy of the praise it received. A complete blockbuster, the movie made $69 million the opening weekend alone. Impressing critics and leaving a positive impression on viewers of all ages, the film quickly made its way on many peoples’ “must-see” lists. Do yourself a favor, join the hype, and go take a bus to see this staggering film.
