Cinema Weekly: The Wolf of Wall Street
Three hours full of sex, drugs and fanaticism for money, The Wolf of Wall Street, featuring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill and directed by the award-winning Martin Scorsese, is frantic and full of energy.Jordan Belfort, acted by the world-famous actor Leonardo DiCaprio, is a shameless nobody living in the 1980s. Growing up in a middle class family in Queens, NY, the innocent Jordan dreams of engraving his name on Wall Street’s history. He joins a blue-chip firm and grows under the tutelage of a drug-fueled leader, Mark Hanna (Matthew McConaughey), who claims to be a successful broker. Within a week of his becoming a licensed broker, Belfort’s blue-chip firm lays him off following the 1987 stock market crash. However, the event would not end Jordan Belfort’s dream of leaving a mark on Wall Street. Instead of analyzing numbers and stock values, Jordan Belfort peruses the local newspaper advertisements for a job offering. In the paper, he finds a local penny-stock boiler room in Long Island. There, a vulgar, cunning and deceptive Jordan Belfort is born. Belfort’s rise begins, and soon Stratton Oakmont, the largest over-the-counter firm of the 1980s, is making the cover of the Forbes magazine. Donnie Azoff (Jonah Hill), a businessman who quits his job after a dinner conversation with Jordan to join him in business, tricks clueless men and women into investing thousands of dollars. Stock fraud becomes the pair’s best friend. However, everything comes with a price. Jordan Belfort’s fall is as quick as his ascent to power. Tied up in handcuffs, he is dragged into the state penitentiary. However, it is not the plot that makes the movie extraordinary. Leonardo DiCaprio is a genius; he plays the role of a man who is nothing but crazy. Jordan Belfort’s actions ruins many people’s lives by lying and stealing from his “clients.” By the end of the movie, it is impossible not to hate Jordan Belfort, and this is exactly what DiCaprio aims for.Jonah Hill also does not disappoint in the role of Donnie Azoff. He acts as a shameless man who smuggles hundred dollar bills into his Swiss bank account by taping the Benjamins to strippers’ breasts. This film is a gem to watch; it is packed with vivid scenes of crazed characters and leaves viewers speechless.
