Sabrina Rose Music Hits Soundcloud

Despite the gloomy atmosphere and the winter term workload, upper Sabrina Movitz has been partaking in a “one cover a week” project, covering songs by various artists and releasing them on SoundCloud, an audio distribution platform.“The idea behind [the project] was that, I think at Exeter it’s hard to be in a creative mindset and take a step back and be able to compose and come up with new ideas when you’re in this atmosphere,” Movitz said. “ So the ‘one cover a week’ project was my way of staying involved in the music scene and keeping up interest in my music without having to put too much effort in, because it’s more about my take on the songs and the vocals rather than creating new music.”Movitz hopes to release her covers every Saturday and Sunday and her originals during the break. So far, Movitz has released two covers via SoundCloud under the name "Sabrina Rose Music."The first cover Movitz released was “Blackbird” by the Beatles. “‘Blackbird’ was a weird venture for me because I’ve never done a layered harmony before; it was an interesting endeavor,” Movitz said. “It took a lot of time, but I was pretty happy with the outcome.”Her second cover, “The Suburbs” by Arcade Fire, was released on the first week of January. “I did a mix between the Arcade Fire version and the Mr. Little Jeans Remix. One is extremely produced with lots of electronic effects but sung by a female down tempo voice, and the other has a classic rock feel,” Movitz said. “I wanted to do something a little bit in between.”Other students who have listened to her covers commented on Movitz’s dedication and admired her musicality. “Sabrina's very diligent with making sure she's continually working on her music career, so even with all of her work she still somehow manages to get on the ‘artist-grind’ into the wee hours of the night,” upper Josh Martinez said. “I really liked her most recent cover of ‘The Suburbs’ by Arcade Fire, and I don't really have the musical prowess to say why I loved it, but sometimes you dig a song because it's really well done.”Upper Kimberly Dawes agreed. “She did a really great job on her recent cover ‘The Suburbs’ by Arcade Fire. She does great arrangements and [I think] she could become the next big singer/songwriter on iTunes.”Students also commented on Movitz’s new album "I'm Confessin' EP", which features both covers and original songs, released on ReverbNation. “I have heard the acoustic version of her song ‘I'm Confessin’ and I thought her voice accompanied the guitar chords really well,” lower Yena Cho said. “The acoustic version also had an enjoyable jazzy tone to it, which was a really nice touch.”In the end, Movitz hopes to continue advancing in her musical endeavors. “I think the beauty of what I’m doing now, with recording covers and with writing my original music, is that I’m still finding my voice,” Movitz said. “Through creating covers and original songs I hope, one day, I will find it.”
