The Fitness Gurus

Hi All,We hope you have had a great healthy start to spring term! Since April Fools’ Day wasn’t too long ago, we wanted to share a funny fitness video with all of you. Search "Jimmy Tatro Gym Etiquette" on YouTube to watch it. But, if you’re too lazy to get on your computer, we have conveniently summed up the main takeaways.1. Girls, don’t only use the elliptical.-Side note: Strength training is very important. Apart from making you look toned, it’ll boost your metabolism and strengthen your bones.2. Don’t take steroids!!!3. Boys, dress with caution for the gym.4. Girls, keep wearing that neon.5. When you’re at the gym actually work out!For our healthy dining hall alternative of the week, we suggest the homemade granola now available at breakfast in both dining halls. Since this granola is homemade, there are no preservatives and no refined sugar. In addition, granola has some great health benefits! Granola lowers your blood pressure (high in potassium and low in sodium), prevents anemia (1/3 daily value of iron per cup) and lowers cholesterol (high fiber). This super tasty food can be paired with skim or soymilk, yogurt or fruit for a nutritious breakfast or snack. Our exercise of the week focuses on strengthening those core muscles to get ready for tanning season (hopefully that day will come). We all know that regular old crunches can get really boring really fast, and that no matter how many you do, they never seem to bring any results. For a more dynamic exercise that will target your upper and lower abs as well as your oblique and back muscles, try going into a pushup position with your legs propped on one of the medium-sized exercise balls in the gym. Keeping your core tight and keeping a straight line from the top of your head to your hips, pull your knees into your chest. Repeat this exercise multiple times but make sure you’re focusing on the form rather than on quantity, as poor form will prevent you from getting results from this exercise. On a final note, here’s a quotation we really liked that summarizes what we should all be doing both in the gym and in the rest of our lives: "Only the weak attempt to accomplish what they know they can already achieve." – Stella JuarezWell that’s it for today, guys. Thanks a lot for reading and have a restful and active week!
